Businesses can help by donating goods and materials that are perhaps no longer needed, but which can benefit the Trust; providing places on appropriate training courses for the Trust staff; and of course sponsoring activities that both raise money and build your team. Helping the Trust can generate valuable press coverage.

Highwater House (formerly known as St. Martins House)

Highwater House is a registered care home managed by the Trust. The Home endeavours to embrace the spirit and intent of the Trust’s Mission Statement.

The aim of Highwater House is to offer care and support to those men of women between the ages of 18 and 65 who are incapable of looking after themselves at the time they are referred.

Reasons may include disability, infirmity, mental disorder, an alcohol problem or a drug problem or any combination of these. The Home’s maximum capacity is 22 people. The Home’s services do not extend to providing nursing care or rehabilitation from alcohol or drugs.

The objectives of the Home are to promote choice, independence, privacy and quality of care to this wide ranging and vulnerable client group by consultation and agreement. The Home will provide a secure, safe environment to help individuals to stabilise and to enable an assessment of their needs to be completed. Residents may have multiple and complex needs; therefore care will be on a “needs assessed” planned basis. In some instances to facilitate this assessment of care needs the Home will seek to meet or arrange for appropriate outside professionals.

Flexible and realistic care plans will be developed to accommodate each individual’s needs and wishes.

The Home will promote inclusion by assisting residents to maintain social and family contacts and by developing a range of leisure and recreational activities to stimulate participation. Residents are encouraged to participate in joint meetings with staff to determine the operational procedures in the care home.

One of the main objectives of the Home is to provide individuals with the opportunities of gaining or re-gaining a greater level of independence. For some that may lead to Highwater House being a temporary base and acting as a stepping stone in their development to full independent living. For others full independence will not be totally achievable and Highwater House will become their home for a greater length of time. For this later group the objective will be to respect their life style and wishes whilst maintaining them in a stable and caring environment. The Home will actively encourage equal opportunities for its residents in line with the Trust’s policy.

Staff are employed in sufficient numbers to meet the aims and objectives of the Home. All staff are provided with induction training, and are encouraged to undertake further training for their personal and professional development. Under the Trust’s recruitment and Equal Opportunities policies, all staff are subject to police checks and their references carefully scrutinised to protect resident’s safety and welfare. The staff team consists of seven senior workers, three project workers, three Nightworkers, one Activities Co-ordinator and eight catering and domestic staff.

Admissions....

...are made by other St. Martins Housing Trust projects or from external agencies. Self-referrals cannot be accepted. Admission is based on an assessment of the individual’s needs. Due consideration will be given to the existing service users in order to protect their privacy and their safety. Emergency admission can be made. An assessment will be done within a maximum of three working days. An emergency admission does not imply the right to stay in the Home and the referred individual may be relocated if the Home cannot meet their needs. A one night introductory visit is offered to all people who have been referred.

Fire Procedure

Alarms and emergency fire drills are regularly carried out by management and staff. In the event of a fire or need to evacuate part or whole of the building, residents will leave the building by the designated fire escapes and assemble at the care park.

Complaints

The Home has a complaints procedure that is explained to each individual on admission and a written copy provided. Any complaint make by or on behalf of a service user will be dealt with under the procedure.

To ensure quality of service this Statement of Purpose will be reviewed on a regular basis in consultation with the National Care Standards Commission.

St Martins House Capital Appeal

The Trust is pleased to announce that the Appeal for funds to re-develop St. Martins House closed in April 2008.  Launched in 2004 the Appeal had the sole aims of preventing the closure of the Trust’s “anchor” project in central Norwich for single homeless people. Using the existing core of the building a new 22-bed Care Home for the dual diagnosis group (homeless individuals with alcohol and mental health issues) was built.  Highwater House was officially opened in April 2008 and provides a light, bright and warm environment for both the staff and the residents.
